Tomakomai City Museum
Finished

Artists

Shozo Kage
Painter Shozo Kage (1923-2002), after studying oil painting at the Imperial Art School (currently Musashino Art University), continued his artistic pursuits while working as an educator at a junior high school in Tomakomai City. He depicted the nature not only of Tomakomai but also various natural landscapes across Hokkaido, capturing the rich expressions of the seasons with vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes. He emerged as a leading landscape artist in Tomakomai. Reflecting on his activities, he left words like, "Continuous observation and inspiration are crucial."

In addition to his paintings, Kage was an excellent essayist, publishing essay collections such as "Ekakitsurezure" (1977) and "Kita no Fukei" (1983). In commemoration of the centennial of his birth in 2023, this exhibition introduces works preserved in his self-named atelier, "Baraetei," along with pieces held by our institution.
