Shunsuke Matsumoto was born in 1912 and was a Western-style painter who developed his career during the Second World War, passing away shortly after the end of the war in 1948. He can be considered a painter who marked the endpoint of modern Japanese art, delineated by the conclusion of the war.

Matsumoto's work exudes a sense of serenity and lyricism while encapsulating a complexity that cannot be fully described by these qualities alone. His life story also contributes to this complexity. All of these aspects continue to hold universal depth and are filled with elements that could serve as a source of inspiration for us in the present day.

Shunsuke Matsumoto continues to capture the hearts of people who create art across generations. This exhibition aims not only to showcase "What is the charm of Shunsuke Matsumoto?" from various perspectives but also to make visible the creativity that is sprouting beyond this "endpoint."
