Shunsuke Taira
Shunsuke Taira was born in Tokyo in 1988. He graduated from the Oil Painting Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2012 and completed his postgraduate studies in the Oil Painting Department of the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the same university in 2014.

From the early stages of his career, Taira has been reconstructing real buildings and structures, incorporating elements of personification and transforming them into objects with a futuristic atmosphere, depicting their appearance with meticulous detail. The depicted buildings and structures do not necessarily portray a utopia of the future; instead, they contain modest hopes and, at the same time, a sense of disappointment, often imbued with irony.

Since the Industrial Revolution, humanity has been advancing mechanization at an astonishing pace, and this speed has not slackened to this day. Taira expresses the madness he feels enveloped in the neon lights of the ever-evolving metropolis and in the industrial areas that pursue functionality relentlessly, incorporating unique personified elements into his works. By depicting imaginary buildings and structures, he visualizes the relationship between buildings and the human psyche, as well as the discomfort he feels towards the city.

In his solo exhibition themed "Labor" held in 2021, he depicted landscapes where reality and illusion intertwine, filled with a sense of oppression and emptiness, which were highly acclaimed as embodying the working environment of contemporary Japanese society.

In this exhibition, the focus will be on painting works depicting construction sites with a stronger sense of unease than oppression and emptiness, along with drawings and three-dimensional works. The series for this exhibition, which started with a desire to depict suspicious construction sites of buildings whose purposes and overall picture are unknown, raises questions about who planned them, or whether the plans themselves have taken on a life of their own.
