Shusaku Arakawa
Nagoya-born artist Shusaku Arakawa established an international reputation with his "Mechanism of Meaning" (1963-), which encouraged viewers to experiment with meaning and perception. While this series has continued, Arakawa's later works express his own contemplations in the form of diagrams (diagrammatic paintings). The geometric motifs in Arakawa's works were meant to be "read," using color, line, and form as if they were ordinary "words," with the cylinder repeatedly used as the central motif.
Arakawa rarely explained how he read his works, but he later spoke on many occasions about the ideas that developed through the creation of his works. This exhibition will attempt to read print works from the 1970s onward in which cylinders appear, using the words of the artists Arakawa drew on as pioneers of his own thought as clues.
