Shuta Hasunuma, Keiji Haino
隙間 presents the exhibition 「U     TA」by the musician and artist Shuta Hasunuma and musician Keiji Haino.

Hasunuma is a composer and artist whose activities extend far beyond music production and performance. In addition to leading the Shuta Hasunuma Philharmonic Orchestra, a collective of diverse musicians, he has developed exhibitions and performances that expand musical composition into visual and spatial expression. This exhibition 「U     TA」emerges from Hasunuma’s ongoing collaborative project with Keiji Haino, a pioneer of Japan’s avant-garde music who has remained at the forefront of experimental sound for over fifty years. Beginning his career in 1970 as an improvising vocalist for Lost Aaraaff—named after a poem by Edgar Allan Poe—Haino has since continued to expand the possibilities of voice and instrumentation through the rock band Fushitsusha, numerous solo works, DJ sets, and cross-genre collaborations.

Meeting on stage in 2017, Hasunuma and Haino have since deepened their dialogue through live improvisation and recording sessions, culminating in the joint creation of the album 「U     TA」. This exhibition grows from that encounter, extending the album into a sound installation that reimagines music as both spatial and material. Sound is replayed through an array of speakers installed in the gallery, reconstructing improvisations recorded within the space. Equipment left in the gallery serves as traces of these performances, marking the resonance between past action and present listening.
Complementing this environment, filmmaker Hana Shimizu contributes moving image works created for the exhibition. Her films gently shift the experience of Hasunuma and Haino’s music from the act of listening toward the act of seeing, serving as a mediator between sound and vision.
「U     TA」creates a site where sound and space resonate to generate a momentary experience that exists only here and now.
