The theme of the 2024 edition of the Sengyo Gallery, "Shifted Ahead," was inspired by the beauty created by overlaps and connections with shifts in each process of traditional Kyoto Yuzen dyeing, as well as the pattern shifts imagined to accommodate the body when wearing a kimono.

In this exhibition, three artists showcase these "shifts with overlaps and connections" in different ways.

Maki Katayama meticulously researches and replaces seemingly unpaintable motifs such as the equinoxes, solstices, seasons, and climates of figures like Madame Curie into paintings using her unique and strict rules over extended periods. Despite the complexity and layering, avoiding aesthetic choices, she ultimately creates beautiful abstract paintings from a vast web of information.

Reiko Kinoshita visualizes the soft and subtle spaces inherent in seemingly flat surfaces through the application of paint to wrinkles, folds, and creases created by paper or fabric, as well as through light sensitivity and sun exposure. The images that emerge from these applications often diverge from the initial expectations, revealing previously unnoticed spaces, changes, and the passage of time.

Takehiro Takao incorporates the uncertainty created by characters, symbols, distances, and viewpoints in architecture and paintings into his works, making the seemingly futile process of making them into something tangible. By sidestepping the fragments of images that have always been overturned, such as imagining dinosaurs through fossils, he strives to anchor them. This attempt to establish what cannot be established creates a chain of imagery.
