Sotatsu Tawaraya Exhibition

Kuboso Memorial Museum of Arts, Izumi
Finished

Artists

Sotatsu Tawaraya
This exhibition focuses on Sotatsu Tawaraya, who was active in Kyoto in the early Edo period. Tawaraya created paintings for both the common people and the aristocracy in Kyoto while Mitsuyoshi Tosa was away from Kyoto and painting in Sakai to avoid warfare.

The Tosa school excelled at Genji-e (Genji pictures depicting the Tale of Genji), which showed a different style of expression from the Tosa school, and is one of the most important schools of Yamato-e in the early modern period.

This exhibition will feature works by Sotatsu Tawaraya and the Sotatsu Studio, which Tawaraya presided over, including paintings of The Tale of Genji and The Tale of Ise, borrowed from museums and private collectors in Japan.
