Splendors of Court Devotion Shrine Treasures from Wakamiya and Kasuga Taisha in Nara

Nara National Museum
Finished
In October 2022, the main shrine building (Important Cultural Property) of Wakamiya Shrine, one of the auxiliary shrines of Kasuga Taisha, will be rebuilt. The rebuilding of the main shrine building and the renewal of its sacred treasures and furnishings have been carried out once every 20 years since ancient times. This special exhibition commemorates the completion of this major project.

Kasuga Wakamiya-gami is said to have been born on March 3, 1003, at the hour of the snake, as the son of the four deities enshrined in the main shrine of Kasuga Taisha. His name is Ama-no-Oshikumono-Mikoto or Gosho-Oji (meaning "fifth deity"), and he has been widely worshipped as the god of water virtues, the god of good harvest, and the god of learning. The Kasuga Wakamiya Onmatsuri (Kasuga Shrine Festival) held every December is known throughout Japan as a grand festival held throughout the whole Yamato region and has a nearly 900-year tradition dating back to 1136.

This exhibition introduces the magnificent world of dynastic culture and the ancient rituals and performing arts of the Wakamiya Shrine through the crafts of the Fujiwara family and other Heian aristocrats, including swords, bows, and ornaments, which were dedicated to the Wakamiya shrine and were made with the highest technology of the time. Through historical materials and artifacts related to the past and present rebuilding, the exhibition will also look back on the enthusiasm and efforts of the people who supported the rebuilding process.
