Sports of Matsue - Past and Present

Matsue History Museum
Finished
In the Edo period, when it came to sports, martial arts were prominent. In Matsue Domain, various martial arts were practiced under the school names like "Fuden-ryu Iai" and "Shinto-ryu Heiho" for swordsmanship, "Isshin-ryu Kanso" and "Kashiwabara-ryu Kagi Yari" for spear techniques, and "Chokusen-ryu Judo" for judo, all known as official styles of the domain. Additionally, they employed many sumo wrestlers such as Ozeki Raiden Tameemon. Moving into the modern era, with support from Seiichi Kishi, who would later become the chairman of the Dai-Nippon Butoku-kai, the Matsue Athletic Association was established, marking its 100th anniversary this year, and contributing to the success of numerous sports athletes. This exhibition introduces the history of judo and the sports of modern Matsue.
