Embassy of Canada Prince Takamado Gallery
Finished
Curated by Mark V. Campbell, founder of the Northside Hip Hop Archive and Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, the exhibition features 12 artists from across Canada, whose works weave together a wide range of artistic expressions, including graffiti art, mixed media, sculpture, and videography. The exhibition will feature works that weave together a wide range of artistic expressions, including graffiti, mixed media, sculpture, videography, and more.

"Still Tho" is a hymn to Canadian visual artists who have shaped hip-hop culture and its aesthetic. Through their work, the artists have brought justice to the forefront and inspired social change in their own country and around the world. The title of this exhibition, "Still Tho," is a spoken-word tribute to the tenacity of these artists, who overcame multiple obstacles to create their work and build community. In this year of the 50th anniversary of the birth of hip-hop culture, this group exhibition celebrates graffiti artists who have tackled hip-hop with great enthusiasm and are constantly pursuing new styles.

While some fields have detailed records of the early days of hip-hop in the late 1970s and early 1980s, most of the visual works have been lost over time. Artists often overwrote their work over the graffiti of other artists, and outdoor murals were damaged by the actions of nature. This exhibition explores how hip-hop visual artists have woven together elements of history, nostalgia, and documentation in mixed-media works, leaving a tangible legacy. It will also shed light on the continuing influence of hip-hop visual art on both Canadian culture and the visual aesthetic of today's digital age.
