Strangers: Japanese Painters Who Adored France

Verkehr Museum (Shimizu Port Terminal Museum)
Finished
The artists who began their lives in France quickly learned the French word "étranger." As translated, it means "foreigner," and Japanese painters were viewed as outsiders by those around them. While creating their works, they followed in the footsteps of the Impressionist masters. Like the artists of the École de Paris, they often gathered at Bar Basque in Montparnasse, run by friendly French people. Among them were the painter Mitsuru Yamashita from Shizuoka and the photographer Yasuhiro Suzuki. As one of the étrangers, Suzuki captured the atmosphere of 1970s Paris on monochrome film. This exhibition introduces the works and photographs created by these artists and those around them who moved to France in the 1960s and 70s.
