Summer Special Exhibition: Second Term - Hosho and Genji-e: The Legacy of Elegance

Hoshun Yamaguchi Memorial Hall
Finished

Artists

Hoshun Yamaguchi, Tomoko Takahashi, Mikiko Hayashi et al.
At a discussion meeting of the New Yamato-e Society members, Hoshun Yamaguchi was asked to name his favorite representative Yamato-e artwork. His response, "The Tale of Genji is indispensable," marked the initial connection between Yamaguchi and Genji-e. Drawn to its elegance, Yamaguchi later illustrated "The Thin Clouds," "The Picture Contest," "The Pine Wind," and "The Rose of Sharon" for Junichiro Tanizaki's new post-war translation of "The Tale of Genji." These drawings, which have been preserved by our museum, will be on display for the first time in this exhibition.

The second term of the exhibition will present the original woodblock prints and drafts of the illustrations for Tanizaki's "The Tale of Genji," along with other items. These include the Yoshio Kawazura version of "The Tale of Genji Picture Scroll," known for its exquisite woodblock prints, and Yamaguchi's previously unknown copy of "The Tale of Genji: Miyasundokoro," which will be publicly exhibited for the first time. Additionally, the exhibition will showcase contemporary items that continue the tradition of Yamato-e, such as Tomoko Takahashi's current reproduction of "The Tale of Genji Picture Scroll" created as part of modern art education and Genji-e works by traditional court painter Mikiko Hayashi, among other art and craft pieces.
