Supreme Purple, Elegant Red, Challenging the Colors of the Dynasty

Okazaki Mindscape Museum
Finished
Brilliant scrolls of colors woven with passion and craftsmanship dyed fabrics were symbols of beauty and wealth. The dazzling colors fascinated people, and purple, in particular, was prized as a precious color. These colors, now lost, were pursued by father and son Tsuneo and Yukio Yoshioka, the fourth and fifth heads of the dyeing workshop "Some-no-tsukasa Yoshioka," which has been in Kyoto since the Edo period (1603-1868).

The Yoshiokas have studied ancient literature, and arts and crafts, and visited dyehouses and techniques around the world in an effort to reproduce traditional Japanese colors using natural dyes. Their work is particularly well known for their reproduction and restoration of colors and costumes in shrine and temple rituals and in classical literature, especially in "The Tale of Genji."

This exhibition introduces the colors of the dynasty that have been revived in the modern age through his relentless pursuit and passion.
