Taka Saito, Chuji Nakamur
Bambinart Gallery is pleased to present The Gaze of Things, a two-person exhibition featuring Taka Saito (b. 2001) and Chuji Nakamura (1898–1975).

Saito held his first solo exhibition in 2023 and has since begun an active career in painting. Nakamura, on the other hand, began exhibiting around 1920. Despite the century that separates them, their works reveal striking resonances. Both artists draw from the fragments of daily life—the insects, plants, and scenery that unfold quietly at their feet. Their imagery encompasses not only realistic depictions, but also abstract elements that express inner sensations, emotions,
and poetic impulses.

When they paint, they do not simply observe their subjects. Their gaze invites a reciprocal gaze; in contemplating a motif, they confront their own memories, emotions, and values.

We were struck by a curious parallel. In Saito’s artist statement, he writes about a moment of encounter with a dragonfly. By chance, in one of Nakamura’s writings, we found another account that also centers around a dragonfly. Across time, both artists seem to respond to the gaze of their motifs—to engage in a silent exchange with the world around them. It is within this mutual act of seeing and being seen that their works emerge.
