Takahiro Imai
"Merry rays," making its debut in Hokkaido, is a piece created in 2010 by Takahiro Imai, who stated as an ironclad rule, "I don't draw instruments that can't be played," succinctly summarizing the allure of the instrument within the gestures of the figure. While the upper half of the canvas is entirely black, it maintains a balanced relationship with the bright section depicting the woman, creating a composition that exudes strength within its simplicity.

While the scene's meaning is adequately explained by the detailed depiction, one can also discern from her expression the consciousness of tracing the melody in the air while looking at the musical notes. It's as if her awareness is suspended between the instrument she holds and her fingertips. She sits there with gestures that seem to suggest being lost in music, forgetting herself while facing the music.

However, the image we have of Takahiro Imai's recent works is their ability to balance ornamentation with simple screens. He says, "In recent years, I've been trying to find that balance." Photorealistic painting is not merely a matter of technique. Because composition involves incredibly complex issues, Imai is also grappling with abstract sensations in his current situation. I imagine Imai wanted to incorporate musical elements into his paintings. The contours of the woman, brought to life by Imai's photorealistic skill, can also be seen as forming a modern form and composition, serving as a sculptural element.

Tenshin Okakura said, "Approach art as if you were meeting a king." While one cannot bow completely to it and still critique, an attitude of reverence toward great things is necessary. This exhibition showcases 14 masterpieces that have been perfected through technical development, each accompanied by its own commentary.

The gallery has come to possess numerous works by Takahiro Imai, including "Merry Rays." This exhibition is intended to provide another opportunity for fans who missed the Takahiro Imai exhibition two years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic to appreciate his work once again.
