Takashi Horisaki
This exhibition features #InstaBonsai Palm Shadows, a work created in response to the artist’s experience of the wildfire that struck Los Angeles in January 2025, focusing on the gap between the image and the reality of palm trees, which are emblematic of California. Horisaki’s ongoing #InstaBonsai series overlays the experience of social media with the structures of universalization and commodification found in the plants and culture of bonsai, drawing an analogy to the practices of modernism. Born out of the cultural history of images surrounding palm trees and the occurrence of a natural disaster, this series seems to suggest that the enjoyment of cultural life casts a shadow of the future on climate change.

When a religious icon gains popularity within mass culture and spreads through the accelerationist dynamism of social media, what kind of forces do images of nature, the symbols of humanity’s prosperity, exert on everyday cultural life? Please participate in the temporal realm of historical sculpture that emerges from the habitat of digital images.
