Takehiko Hoshino
This will be Takehiko Hoshino's solo exhibition since his previous exhibition titled "Gears and Levers" held at our center in 2021. As introduced in the previous exhibition, Hoshino strives to minimize the elements that make up the composition of his artwork, or he uses the simplest methods possible to create and think about how to establish his work as a painting or an image. When talking about his creative process, Hoshino often says, "I want to laugh at the act of drawing a picture in the end." Perhaps Hoshino's way of creating is to illuminate painting from something that cannot be painted.

The title of this exhibition, "Chaos," can be said to represent Hoshino's creative style. The term "Chaos" is derived from "Zhuangzi," a Chinese philosophical text. In "Zhuangzi," there is an emperor named "Chaos" who is depicted as a featureless figure without eyes, nose, ears, or mouth. Emperors of the South Sea and the North Sea meet Chaos and treat him with great hospitality. They consult with each other and decide that since everyone else has seven orifices (eyes, ears, mouth, and nose) through which they see, hear, eat, and breathe, they should open seven holes on Chaos's face as a gesture of gratitude for the hospitality they received. However, Chaos dies as a result. "Chaos" (Hundun) symbolizes an undifferentiated and indistinct state on one hand, and thus, it can be interpreted that by opening seven holes and giving Chaos a face, Chaos ceases to be "Chaos." As mentioned earlier, Hoshino's creation aims to establish itself as a painting with minimal elements, which overlaps with the story of Chaos, who ceases to be Chaos by having seven holes opened on his face.

However, despite the minimalism of Hoshino's paintings, the humor lies in incorporating qualities such as unpredictability and materiality that he considers inherent to painting. By partially relinquishing control over his creation, Hoshino attempts to create works that surprise him the most.

This exhibition will primarily feature previously released works from recent years with some new additions. It provides an opportunity to observe Hoshino's recent and intriguing endeavors cohesively.
