On October 11th, 2024, MIDORI.so Gallery will present Primitive Equilibrium, a solo exhibition by Taku Tagami at our Bakuroyokoyama location. Tagami, a Tokyo-based artist with a foundation in architectural design, offers a body of work that explores the intricate balance between natural elements and human-made structures. His practice, which spans sculpture, photography, and drawing, is rooted in a fascination with the forces that shape the world around us—forces that are often invisible yet profoundly influential.

Tagami’s work draws inspiration from the subtle and overlooked objects in nature—stones, driftwood, and leaves weathered by time. These elements, shaped by multiple forces such as wind, water, and gravity, reveal a process of creation that is not controlled by a singular will, but rather emerges from a complex interplay of relationships. For Tagami, this mirrors the structures we create as humans, both physical and social, which are also born from layers of interaction and history.

Primitive Equilibrium invites viewers to step beyond the layers of civilization—language, history, and science—that shape our modern understanding of the world and to reconnect with a more primal, unfiltered way of seeing. In doing so, Tagami aims to rekindle a sense of playfulness and freedom in the creative process, much like how ancient peoples might have found deep meaning in a simple, naturally formed stone. The exhibition delves into the concept of structure, not only in terms of material mechanics but also in the relationships that bind systems and communities together. Through this lens, Tagami’s work offers new perspectives on the way we inhabit and shape our environments, encouraging us to see the world through fresh, unencumbered eyes.
