Tang Sancai -Figures of Ancient China-

Matsuoka Museum of Art
Finished
During the Tang Dynasty, a tradition emerged involving the placement of vivid figurines known as "Tang Sancai" or "painted figurines" within tombs. This practice stemmed from ancient Chinese belief in the commencement of a new existence following death. Consequently, figurines depicting servants, horses, camels, and oxen were interred alongside the deceased as companions in the afterlife. This exhibition will highlight Tang Sancai and painted figurines, notably featuring the renowned Sancai horses.
