Tatsuo Ikeda
Tatsuo Ikeda (1928-2020) was born in Niri-cho, Imari City, and remained active at the forefront of the art scene with his energetic creative activities until his death at 92. The following retrospective exhibition will be held for the first time in his hometown of Saga, looking back on Ikeda's painting career spanning some 70 years.

Ikeda joined the naval aviation corps at the age of 15, and the war ended while he was training for suicide attacks. After that, Ikeda moved to Tokyo to pursue art and was attracted to avant-garde art, which demanded more experimental and daring expression. He pursued his expression through acquaintance with various artists, including the painter Taro Okamoto, as well as literature, music, and film. His works are diverse, including a series of pen drawings that sharply and humorously expose the contradictions and absurdities of society, “Brahman," which mysteriously depicts images of life and the universe, and mysterious objects (three-dimensional works) made from scrap wood.

Ikeda says that living as an artist is a "fight" or "struggle," while art is “play." Ikeda created art, a form of "play" that gives form to the freedom of the human mind and spirit while struggling with the harsh conditions of life and methods of expression.

This exhibition introduces the life of Tatsuo Ikeda, one of the most prominent postwar and contemporary Japanese art artists, and the trajectory of his "play" and “struggle."
