The Asahi Shimbun established the "Ihei Kimura Photography Award" in 1975 to commemorate the achievements of Ihei Kimura, who devoted himself to the development of photography in Japan, and after the publishing division became independent as Asahi Shimbun Publications in April 2008, the two companies jointly sponsored the award.

The prize is awarded to new photographers, both professional and amateur, from Japan and abroad, who have achieved outstanding results in the production and presentation of photographs between January and December each year.

The 47th Ihei Kimura Photography Award was awarded to Tatsuru Nitta for his photography book "Sakhalin" and exhibition "Sakhalin Continued”.

The winners were selected by a selection committee from among candidates nominated by people in the photography industry. The 47th selection committee consisted of four members: photographers Mitsugu Onishi, Yurie Nagashima, Tomoko Sawada, and novelist Keiichiro Hirano.
