Tea Utensils of the Hosokawa Family - Sen no Rikyu and Sansai Hosokawa

Eisei-Bunko Museum
Finished
Sen no Rikyu (1522-1591), a great master of wabicha (tea ceremony), interacted with many warlords and taught them the tea ceremony. He had a close relationship with the Hosokawa family and was a close friend of Fujitaka I (Yusai, 1534-1610). Tadaoki II (Sansai, 1563-1645), one of Rikyu's "seven philosophers," inherited Rikyu's wabicha as a highly respected disciple. Since then, the Hosokawa family enjoyed the tea ceremony, and the Eiseibunko collection contains a variety of tea utensils inherited from the feudal lords.

This exhibition features several tea ceremony utensils passed down through the Hosokawa family, with a focus on masterpieces associated with Rikyu and Sansai Hosokawa that belonged to Sen no Rikyu. Tea bowls created by four generations of the Hosokawa family (Moritatsu (16th), Morisada (17th), Morihiro (17th), and Morimitsu (17th)) are also on display to highlight the aesthetic sense of the tea ceremony passed down from generation to generation.

In addition, a rare letter from the warrior tea master Furuta Oribe (1544-1615) to Sansai Hosokawa, which was discovered in 2021, will be exhibited for the first time. (1573-1645), who is closely associated with the Hosokawa family.
