The Utsunomiya Espère Award, established in 2001, is given to an artist who is associated with the city of Utsunomiya, either by residence or by having a base of activity in the city, and whose creative activities are outstanding and whose future success is promising. The purpose of the award is to promote art and culture by supporting and fostering the recipient through exhibitions and other means.
The word “ espère" is French for hope and expresses the desire to support the artist's future development. The 15th Espére Award for 2020 was awarded to Ayato Fujiwara from among the many submissions in the gallery-related categories (fine arts, literature, tea ceremony, flower arrangement, and others).
Born in Kyoto in 1975 and raised in Mashiko, Tochigi, Fujiwara has been exhibiting his works in earnest since completing his master's degree in sculpture at the Tokyo University of the Arts in 2003 and has consistently created portraits of human figures, moving freely between abstract and representational styles, in pursuit of the human condition in the present. In this exhibition, visitors will be able to see his recent representative works, the "Zoka/daika: Axis and Surroundings" series, approximately 200 drawings and 500 hand-painted statues created for daily image expression, as well as new works created especially for this exhibition.
