This year marks the 40th anniversary of the contest, which began in 1983 as a commemoration of the Asahi Shimbun's selection of "100 Japanese Nature Sites to be Preserved for the 21st Century." The theme of the contest is "Nature in Japan that we want to keep forever" and 60 works, including the Grand Prize, were selected from among 5,022 entries in the Print Division.
In the Digital Division, which is for web-based entries, 10,421 works were submitted, of which 37 were selected, including the "Grand Prize Sony 4K Award" and the "Sony Next Photographer Award," which is awarded to entrants 30 years old and under.
