The Aesthetics of the Tokugawa and Daimyo Families

Homma Museum of Art
Finished
Since its opening in 1947, the Honma Museum of Art has housed approximately 3,000 objects in a wide range of genres, donated by the Homma family and many collectors, and acquired over 76 years of museum activities.

Among them are historically valuable items such as calligraphy, paintings, tea ceremony utensils, armory, and wedding furnishings associated with warlords and feudal lords, and in particular, must-see items received by the Honma family for their efforts to reform the finances of the Shonai and Yonezawa clans, which were suffering from financial difficulties, by providing loans to feudal lords and other Tohoku domains.

In conjunction with the NHK historical drama “Dousuru Ieyasu" currently being broadcast, this exhibition introduces the museum's collection of Tokugawa Ieyasu's letters, as well as arts and crafts and historical materials related to the Tokugawa family, the Sakai family of the Shonai domain, the Uesugi family of the Yonezawa domain, and other feudal families connected to Ieyasu.
