The Beauty of Prayer - Buddhist Art from the Goryeo and Joseon Dynasties

Kyushu National Museum
Finished
Buddhism was introduced to the Korean Peninsula, which lies across the sea from Japan, in the 4th century, some 200 years earlier than in Japan. Since then, Buddhism has been the spiritual center of the people living in this region and has greatly influenced their culture and thought. Among these, the Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon (1392-1897) dynasties developed their unique beauty. The Goryeo Dynasty is known for its kings' devotion to Buddhism, while Joseon had Confucianism as its state religion and did not favor Buddhism.

Although these two dynasties had different policies toward Buddhism, in both periods, many Buddhist statues and paintings were created by people who believed in salvation by the Buddha.

This exhibition features works from the 11th to 16th centuries during the Goryeo and Joseon dynasties, a period that spanned approximately 1,000 years. These austere and vital Buddhas convey the deep and earnest prayers of the people and are also important for the development of Buddhist art throughout East Asia.
