The Beauty of Transcendental Ceramics of the Meiji and Taisho Eras: Seto, Mino, Banko, Tokoname

Yokoyama Art Museum
Finished
Seto and Tokoname ware from Aichi Prefecture, Mino ware from Gifu Prefecture, and Banko-yaki from Mie Prefecture. These are the three prefectures in the Tokai region, each of which has its own appeal.

During the Meiji period (1868-1912), exports of these products flourished, and unconventional techniques and decorations were developed. In addition to producing traditional underglaze blue porcelain, Seto also supplies overglaze porcelain base for overglaze painting to other production areas.

In Tokoname, three-dimensional decorations were applied to ceramics made of "shu-odori," a reddish color produced from iron-containing clay, for export. In Mino, which was often equated with Seto, the identity of "Mino ware" was born, and the elegant technique of underglaze coloring, which was in vogue during the Art Nouveau period, flourished. Banko-yaki, a gray ceramic ware, was covered with colorful glazes and decorative clays, and its sales channels were expanded to overseas markets through the port of Yokkaichi.

This exhibition will showcase the unique beauty that developed in Seto, Mino, Banko, and Tokoname, mainly during the Meiji and Taisho periods.
