The Culture of the Great Lords - the Okayama Ikeda Family and Aizu - Bushi, Glory and Ambition

Fukushima Museum
Finished
The Ikeda family, the feudal lords of the Okayama domain, was one of the leading feudal families in the western part of Japan. Mitsumasa Ikeda, the founder of the domain, and Masayuki Hoshina, the feudal lord of the Aizu domain, lived at the same time and were both revered as great lords.

This exhibition, with the special cooperation of the Hayashibara Museum of Art in Okayama City, presents several masterpieces that tell the story of the Ikeda family's civil and military history in Aizu.

Successive heads of the Ikeda family ruled Okayama from the Warring States Period to the early Edo Period, including Ujisato Gamo and Masayuki Hoshina. This exhibition begins by introducing these great lords of both regions who were active in the transition from war to civil government.

These masterpieces convey the splendor of the feudal lord's culture and the art of Okayama. The exhibition is brought to a close with the work of Gyokudo Uragami, a warrior of the Okayama domain turned man of letters who was invited by the Aizu domain to revive the kagura of the Tsuchitsu Shrine dedicated to Masayuki Hoshina and his son。
