Tatsuaki Kuroda
This exhibition celebrates the 120th anniversary of the birth of Tatsuaki Kuroda (1904–1982), the first woodworker to be recognized by Japan as a Living National Treasure.

The connection between Kagizen Yoshifusa and Tatsuaki Kuroda dates back to the time of the twelfth head of the Kagizen Yoshifusa store, Zenzo Imanishi (1904–1942). Zenzo met Kuroda through his close ties with Kanjiro Kawaii (1890–1966) and other Mingei movement artists. Zenzo was enthralled by Kuroda’s work and had him produce many items for Kagizen. These include the two large display cabinets- Fuki-urushi (wiped lacquer) keyaki (zelkova) kazari-dana display cabinets that face each other inside the entrance of the main Kagizen store on Shijo-dori, and bowls such as Raden (mother of pearl) inlay kuzukiri bowls used for serving Kagizen’s kuzukiri noodles at teahouses in Gion.

This exhibition reveals the depth of the connection between Kuroda and Kagizen, which extends beyond a simple relationship between artist and client.
