The Katsuhiko Motono Collection - Collecting Saga

Saga Prefectural Museum / Art Museum
Finished
In March 2021, Katsuhiko Motono, who devoted himself to the research of Gochiku Nakabayashi and the collection and publication of materials related to Saga Prefecture, passed away at the age of 88. Motono's parents were from Saga Prefecture, and he spent about two years from the age of 14 in Saga Prefecture. In addition to running his father's business, Toho Shokan, he also served as the executive director of the Tokyo Saga Kenjinkai and was a great supporter of Saga Prefecture.

Before his death, Motono had the intention of donating all of his collected materials and works to Saga Prefecture, and he worked with the prefectural curators to prepare for the donation, including the transportation and cataloging of the materials. After Katsuhiko's death, his son, Atsuhiko officially donated the materials in February 2022.

The Katsuhiko Motono Collection, which has been acquired by the Saga Prefectural Museum, the Saga Prefectural Art Museum, and the Saga Castle Historical Museum, totals 476 items, ranging from the Warring States Period to the present day, and from ancient documents to contemporary art, but all are consistent in their focus on materials and works related to Saga Prefecture. In this sense, Motono has "collected Saga" rather than objects.

This exhibition introduces a wide variety of materials and works from the Katsuhiko Motono Collection that tell the story of Saga's history, culture, and art, which Motono valued so much.
