The Masayoshi Takase Collection Exploring the Pottery of Hyogo: Visiting the Kilns of the Five Provinces

The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo
Finished
Masayoshi Takase, born in 1940 in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, began studying the Omuro-miya Youshin-goryu school of ikebana in 1959 to enjoy satsuki bonsai. Alongside his interest in the tea ceremony, he also developed an interest in pottery. In the same year, a Tamba ware pot he acquired in Kobe sparked his fascination with Hyogo Prefecture pottery. Over approximately 65 years, he actively collected works from the kilns of Hyogo's five regions—Tamba, Settsu, Tajima, Harima, and Awaji.

His collection includes mainly modern works, such as Sanda ware (Sanda City) and Minpei ware (Minamiawaji City), which began in the late Edo period, as well as Uchide ware (Ashiya City), Kobe ware (Kobe City), and Sasayama ware (Tamba Sasayama City), which continued production into the Showa era. Takase enriched his collection by visiting familiar antique shops and pottery markets held in various locations, acquiring a wide range of ceramics, including flower vases, tea utensils, and tableware.

From 2020 to 2023, the Hyogo Ceramic Art Museum received 82 pieces from Takase's collection as a donation. To commemorate this, the museum is holding a special exhibition that aims to widely showcase the works collected by Takase with his unique aesthetic sense and to allow visitors to appreciate the diverse pottery produced across the prefecture.
