The Okura Collection: The Beauty of Faith

Okura Shukokan Museum of Fine Arts
Finished
Kihachiro Okura (1837-1928), the industrialist who established the Okura Shukokan, was concerned about the situation in which Buddhist statues and paintings were being taken out of temples and shrines and discarded due to the abandonment of Buddhism in the early Meiji period and devoted himself to the protection of these cultural assets. Kihachiro's collection of Buddhist art includes many fine works from the medieval and early modern periods, such as beautiful Buddhist statues created by the Shakyamuni faith, esoteric Buddhism, and Pure Land Buddhism.
This exhibition focuses on the Japanese Buddhist art collection, tracing the history of faith and introducing the forms of beauty and prayer entrusted to the artworks in the collection.
The National Treasure "Fugen Bosatsu," one of the museum's most famous works, will also be on display.
