The Origins of Japanese Modern Glass

Toyama Glass Art Museum
Finished
Since the Meiji era (1868-1912), Western-style glass manufacturing methods have become widespread in Japan, and a wide range of glass products have been produced. In this context, it was Toshichi Iwata and Kozo Kagami who worked on glass production as their own expression and struggled to raise the status of glass as an art form.

From the 1950s through the 1970s, many designers affiliated with glass companies were active in both product design and arts and crafts. On the other hand, there were also artists who did not belong to a company but rented factories and craftsmen to create their works in the form of "pots for rent," or who established their own kilns after working for a glass company.

This exhibition traces the movement of glass art over the past 100 years from the 1870s to the early 1970s, introducing the creative works and product designs of the artists who paved the way for each era, as well as related materials from the period.
