The Taste for Incense

Hayashibara Museum of Art
Finished
The culture of incense was introduced with the arrival of Buddhism. In Japan, incense has been revered as a talisman to purify the body and mind, and to ward off evil spirits. In later times, "Kodo," the art of listening to and appreciating incense, was established based on a set of manners, and incense is also enjoyed in daily life as a fashionable item of clothing and cosmetics.

This exhibition focuses on incense implements handed down in the Ikeda family, the feudal lords of Okayama, as well as wedding furnishings, hina utensils, and scent bags worn with armor, all of which showcase the "taste for incense" fostered by Japan's rich aesthetic sense.
