The Vision of Yoshimura Kan’a: The 260th Anniversary of his Birth

Fukuoka Art Museum
Finished
Yoshimura Kan’a (1765-1848) was a tea master who established himself by judging the value of tea utensils as a connoisseur in the late Edo period. Visiting prominent figures such as daimyo tea master Matsudaira Fumai and the Mizoguchi family of the Shibata domain, he appraised their collections and acted as a broker of tea utensils. Kan’a has been acclaimed for his achievements to this day, and utensil boxes bearing his inscriptions have come to be recognized as highly valuable. This exhibition displays tea utensils that Kan’a introduced to daimyo tea masters as well as items that illustrate the exchanges between him and various cultural figures, inviting viewers to explore the legacy and aesthetic taste of this unknown connoisseur.
