Thermae Ancient Rome, Japan, and the Joy of Bathing

Yamanashi Prefectural Museum of Art
Finished
Ancient Roman public bathhouses (Thermae) are known for their advanced architectural and civil engineering techniques and are highly regarded both in Japan and abroad as symbols of the affluent lifestyle of the time. In Japan, public bathhouses are also much loved, and even today, when baths in the home have become the norm, there are approximately 700 public bathhouses in Tokyo alone.

This exhibition, under the supervision of Masaki Aoyagi and Kyoko Haga, Japan's leading experts on ancient Rome, and with the cooperation of Mari Yamazaki, known for her manga "Thermae Romae," introduces the lives of people in ancient Rome, focusing on bath culture. Through more than 100 works of art, including paintings, sculptures, and archaeological artifacts, as well as videos and reproductions, visitors will be able to feel more familiar with ancient Rome.

The exhibition will be held in some of the country's most famous hot spring resorts.
