Tomomi Oka
Tomomi Oka uses "reversal" as one of the keywords in her work. Reversal of time, reversal of movement, reversal of image. Reversal has the effect of turning a part of the every day around and transforming the familiar into something different. In her previous work "Sakasagoto" (2022), Oka dealt with the ancient Japanese custom of reversing everyday movements when a person dies. Such an ancient Japanese idea evokes a world in which the every day and the otherworldly were adjacent to each other and breathed at the same time, just as light and darkness were closer together in Japanese houses in the days when there were no fluorescent lights. In Oka's work, the technique of creating a kind of illusion in a space and transforming it into another world and the ancient Japanese way of living with the other world meet in a contemporary space and emerge like monuments to a vanishing custom.
