Tomoyuki Kambe
Japanese painter Tomoyuki Kambe is a leading artist in the contemporary Japanese painting scene, known for his seasonal works that project human activities onto small creatures, attracting attention with their rich sense of seasonality. Learning from classical techniques and materials, Kambe has developed his unique method of layering extremely thin Japanese paper and coloring, giving his works a distinct atmosphere and depth, captivating many with their delicate expression.

Kambe, who engages in a variety of activities, moved to Dazaifu after being commissioned to create fusuma paintings for the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, where he spent 10 years completing 24 fusuma paintings.

The Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine, built on the grave of Sugawara no Michizane, is widely revered as the god of learning, culture, and the arts. In 2027, marking the 900th anniversary of Michizane's passing in 1125, the original paintings of the fusuma will be mounted and dedicated to the fusuma.

In this exhibition, visitors will have the opportunity to preview the newly completed original paintings of the fusuma and explore Tomoyuki Kambe's charm, centered around artworks housed in the Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine collection. Experience the brilliance of nature and life woven by light and rich colors, and feel the millennia of prayers that have been passed down in Dazaifu.
