Top notch: The Tale of Genji

Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts and Culture
Finished
Saga Arashiyama is one of Japan's leading tourist destinations with deep connections to "Take of Genji," the oldest existing long novel written in the mid-Heian period. In the vicinity of the museum, there is said to be the residence of Akashi, a consort of the main character Hikaru Genji, and the princess born between them. Additionally, within walking distance, you can find the mountain villa site of Minamoto no Toru, believed to be the model for Hikaru Genji, called Seiryo-ji Temple, the Nomiya Shrine that Hikaru Genji visited secretly to meet Rokujo no Miyasudokoro, and Daikaku-ji Temple, said to have been built by Hikaru Genji on the north side of the hall.

In this exhibition, spanning over a millennium, we introduce Japanese paintings inspired by the still-beloved "Tale of Genji," with explanations of each scene.
