Toru Hara "Cutting Light"

Gallery Iriya Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Toru Hara
Sculptor Toru Hara attempts to express the danger inherent in the act of cutting physical elements such as time, space, and light by giving form to their images.

The "Cutting Light" series began with Hara's encounter with the national treasure Okanehira in the Tokyo National Museum collection. This sword was made in the late Heian period (794-1185). It was later passed down to the Ikeda family, lords of the Okayama domain, and is considered the greatest masterpiece of all Japanese swords in existence.

As a sculptor, Hara feels deeply the presence of this material and continues to work with the hope of exploring its origin through form. In this exhibition, Hara will show works in which he attempts new development by changing the material from stone to wood.
