Artists

Toshinobu Onosato
Toshinobu Onosato (1912-1986), a notable Japanese abstract painter, pioneered avant-garde art. From 1954 to 1959, Onosato focused on circles, creating a geometric abstract style with mosaic-like square groups in red, yellow, green, and navy—the "Flat Circle Era." In 1960, the "Flat Circle Era" came to an end, and the "Circle Division Era" began, featuring large circles intricately divided and filled with precise squares. Leading a solitary life, Onosato was dedicated to painting and produced numerous oil and watercolor works, along with approximately 200 print works. This exhibit showcases significant pieces from the 1954 period when the focus turned to circles, including oil and watercolor paintings from the "Flat Circle Era" and "Circle Division Era." Print works will also be on display.
