Toshio Miyaoka
Gallery Yuki-Sis will hold a solo exhibition of Toshio Miyaoka "Inverted painting, Another landscape," from August 26-September 10.
A single postage stamp-sized scrap cut from a magazine or other source. Looking at it upside down, Miyaoka enlarges and paints it, then returns it to its original position to complete the painting. When Miyaoka does not "paint the object" but instead captures only the "color, shape, and light" of the object, what becomes a painting?
Other than the color and shape of the restricted motifs, only the brush strokes dance freely, creating a rhythm like that of an abstract painting. Social phenomena, events, and people were prevalent in every era, along with the time and place. Unknowingly, we are imbued with common sense and standards of value that match the era in which we live, and we judge everything accordingly. Miyaoka's paintings, created by taking this common sense and viewing them as flat and meaningless, produce a somewhat disturbing sense of discomfort, and we are sure to notice it.
