Chishakuin Temple, located in Higashiyama, Kyoto, is the head temple of the Chizan school of Shingon Buddhism, which originated with Kobo Daishi Kukai (774-835) and has about 3,000 branch temples throughout Japan. It was founded in the mid-Muromachi period (1336-1573) on the grounds of Negoroji Temple in Kii Province, which later became prosperous, inheriting the Buddhist lineage of Kokyo Daishi Kakuhaku (1095-1143), who is considered the founder of the Koyasan school. The temple once declined under the administration of Hideyoshi Toyotomi during the Tensho period, but later received a donation from Ieyasu Tokugawa, and was reestablished in its current location in the early Edo period. Shounji Temple was originally built on this site to mourn the loss of Hideyoshi's prematurely deceased son, Tsurumatsu (Abasumaru), and the famous gold and blue barrier paintings by Tohaku Hasegawa (1539-1610) and his son Kyuzo (1568-93) have been carefully protected by Chishakuin and preserved to this day.

This exhibition will be the first time that such renowned works, including the National Treasures "Maple View" and "Cherry Blossom View," will be exhibited simultaneously outside the temple, providing a rare opportunity to experience the gorgeous lyrical beauty of the Momoyama period. In addition, the National Treasure "Kongo-kyo Sutra" and the Important Cultural Property "Kujaku-myo-o Statue" will be on display, along with a wide variety of treasures from the Chishakuin collection, including rare masterpieces of Buddhist art that adorn the Buddhist temple and "Woman at Tea" by Insho Domoto (1891-1975), a representative of the modern Kyoto school of painting.
