Treasures of the Marquis Kuroda Family

Fukuoka City Museum
Finished
The valuable collection of the Kuroda family, lords of the former Fukuoka domain, was donated by the Kuroda family to Fukuoka City in September 1978 (part of the collection was deposited or purchased).

Of the Kuroda materials held at the Fukuoka City Museum, the armor of successive domain lords, the golden seal, a national treasure, and the famous spear "Nihon-go," as well as swords and old documents, have been transferred to the Fukuoka City Museum.

The original Kuroda family collection included not only what is now owned by Fukuoka City, but also a larger number of antiquities. These were originally collected in the Edo period and were reorganized as "family heirlooms" during the Meiji and Showa periods, and some of them were sold or transferred.

This exhibition commemorates the 400th anniversary of the death of Nagamasa Kuroda, the first feudal lord of the Kuroda clan, and features valuable items from the Kuroda family collection from the Meiji to Showa periods and the postwar period that were considered "heirlooms". The "heirlooms" of the modern Marquis Kuroda family, which shaped the present collection, are introduced through approximately 140 items, including national treasures and important cultural properties.
