Ukiyo-e flourished during the Edo period. This exhibition focuses on hand-painted ukiyo-e, which are paintings created by ukiyo-e artists rather than the typical woodblock prints. The exhibition will trace the beginnings of ukiyo-e from the early 17th-century genre paintings and Matabei Iwasa, moving through the activities of numerous renowned ukiyo-e artists such as Moronobu Hishikawa, Utamaro Kitagawa, and Hokusai Katsushika, all the way to the end of the Edo period through the lens of hand-painted beauties. Additionally, exquisite shunga (erotic art) masterpieces will be introduced, that are indispensable as representations of the openness of the people of the Edo period towards sexuality.
