The title of the exhibition, "Under Current" means an invisible current, suggesting a current that is difficult to see but certainly exists beneath the swell of trends and the mainstream of the times.

This exhibition, currently being held at the Powerlong Museum in Shanghai, features approximately 100 works by 16 Japanese artists who spent their youth in the stagnant period after the bursting of the bubble economy and have been searching for a new zeitgeist. This is the first exhibition of their works and activities which have not been discussed systematically in the history of Japanese contemporary art. Their expressions have left the political perspective, and by focusing on the identity of the individual, the most delicate detail of society, they have produced many works that question the meaning of existence and universality of human beings, which everyone can relate to. Observing the global trend toward a shift from a mass consumption society to a sustainable society, we have also seen strong future-oriented works that focus on the awe of nature, respect for life, and the new relationship that should be spun between the natural environment and human society.
