Artists

Katsushika Hokusai
Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), a renowned ukiyo-e artist of the Edo period, created numerous masterpieces from age 19 until passing at 90. In 1814, the first edition of "Hokusai Manga" was published as a model for pupils, receiving acclaim from the general public. Vividly depicting various aspects of life, flora, fauna, natural phenomena, and famous scenic spots throughout the country, as well as gods, Buddhas, and ghosts, Hokusai's elegant brushwork, dynamic composition, and humorous depictions of people's features and fleeting movements eloquently illustrate remarkable artistic ability and vision. Referred to as an "old man crazy to paint," Hokusai continued to create until reaching 90 years of age.

This exhibition presents approximately 200 carefully selected works from Mitsuru Urakami's "Hokusai Manga" collection, considered the world's largest in quality and quantity. On exhibit are numerous artworks that embody the captivating essence of Hokusai, renowned for depicting all facets of nature and the universe.
