Artists

Seitei Watanabe
Seitei Watanabe was the first Japanese painter who visited Paris during the Meiji period, garnering admiration from the Impressionists and Westerners. Although recognized by Fenollosa and Tenshin Okakura, Watanabe chose not to join art circles or take pupils later in life, focusing instead on creating art for the general public. Recently, in 2021, the University Museum, The University of Tokyo hosted a significant retrospective exhibition showcasing Watanabe's works, and Shogakukan published a comprehensive art book providing an extensive overview of Watanabe's artistic oeuvre. This reappraisal of Watanabe's work is gaining momentum, particularly among Japanese art scholars and enthusiasts worldwide. This exhibition showcases 24 diverse artworks from Watanabe's first major art collection, highlighting the artist's unique charm through flower and bird paintings, historical scenes, beauty portraits, Buddhist art, landscapes, animal depictions, and seasonal festival illustrations.
