This will be New York-based photographer Victor Sira's third solo exhibition at IG Photo Gallery, following his exhibitions "Pictures of Nothing: Bookworks and Photographs" in 2022 and "No Place: Somewhere" in 2023.
The theme of this exhibition is "Homecoming." From 2003 to 2016, Sira returned annually to Caracas, the capital of Venezuela where he was born and raised, to visit his father. He compiled the photographs he took during these visits into a photo book. The works exhibited this time are selected from the images featured in that photo book.
Titled "Caracas: Homecoming," the photo book does not depict people. Instead, it consists of landscapes and objects such as buildings, walls, streets, cars, plants, houses, and parks. These images are associated with Sira's childhood memories and the places and objects he encountered. From private spaces like his grandmother's house to the interiors of public buildings, Sira's perspective freely moves across Caracas, capturing the essence of the city's accumulated history.
Despite Venezuela's political instability reported in the news, these photographs portray a personal perspective, revealing the city in a way that is not typically shown in media coverage.
Sira is known as a pioneer in the creation of dummy books, which have become a global trend among photographers. In this exhibition, alongside 38 photo prints (color photographs), we will also display the completed version of "Caracas: Homecoming" and 6 dummy books of "Caracas: Homecoming." By transitioning from prints to photo books and exhibitions, the exhibition prompts consideration of how the impression of images captured in photographs changes through "editing." It will serve as a guide for contemplating what it means to edit photographs.
