Wandering in the Otherworld - Mysteries, Prayers, Life and Death

Osaka Museum of History
Finished
Since ancient times, people have been aware of the "other world." They were awe-struck by phenomena that were beyond the reach of human knowledge, which they believed were caused by the inhabitants of the other world, and they tried to ward off disasters that befell them through earnest prayers to gods and Buddhas belonging to the other world. They also performed various rituals to rejoice in the birth of new life, celebrate its growth, and pay their respects to the dead. To understand the causes of natural disasters and calamities, and to overcome the suffering of life and the fear of death, people imagined otherworldly worlds.

This exhibition introduces a wide range of materials related to the other world, including folk artifacts such as vessels and prayer objects related to folk beliefs, archaeological artifacts such as ritual implements and burial accessories, and paintings and historical materials depicting other worlds, gods, Buddha, and ghosts.
